Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף מ,א משנה

one who recites a blessing upon fruits of the tree and mistakenly says the blessing "who creates the fruit of the earth" he has fulfilled his obligation but on fruit of the earth if he mistakenly said "who created the fruit of the tree" He has not fulfilled his obligation. and on all of them if he said "of whom all things came into being through His word" he has fulfilled his obligation

דף מ,א גמרא

Which Tanna taught: ??? tree the land She Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak said it is R' Yehudah For it was taught in a baraita ??? the tree sends and he does not read R' Yehuda says: sends ??? on fruit of the earth ??? This is obvious! Thus said Rabbi ??? son of Isaac No. ??? except according to R' Yehudah for he said: ??? tree She as it is taught: tree who ate from him a person ??? Rabbi Meir says: ??? he was that do not to you a thing ??? on a person except wine as it is said (Gen. 9) ??? from the wine ??? Rabbi ??? says fig tree it was ??? in it ??? as it is said (Gen. 3) ??? He ascended fig tree Rabbi Yehudah says ??? it was that do not ??? know to read Abba ??? until if he tastes something ??? grain ??? I thought to say Because Rabbi Yehuda said ??? tree She ??? upon it "who created the fruit of the tree" Come and hear from this. in a case we bless "who created the fruit of the tree" in a case and so when ??? for him ??? and then, separately, i.e., in addition to Moses pitching the tent, we had ???

דף מ,ב גמרא

but: in a case and so when ??? for him ??? we do not bless upon it "who created the fruit of the tree" except ??? and on all of them if he said ??? was it said; Rav Huna he said except for the bread and from the wine And Rabbi Yochanan said: Even if bread and wine Let him say ??? he saw bread and he said how much ??? bread -- this refers to Blessed be the place ??? he has fulfilled his obligation he saw fig tree and he said how much ??? fig tree -- this refers to Blessed be the place ??? he has fulfilled his obligation These are the words of R' Meir R' Yosei says all ??? the sages ??? he has not fulfilled his obligation. Lit., he has not caused his obligation to go out from his hands. Let him say Rav Huna for he said: like R' Yosi and R' Yochanan for he said: ??? Rav would say to you ??? I that they said Even if to R' ??? Up to this point, he does not come to say i.e., what he really means is not: R' Meir there i.e., in another mishna except in a case that he came ??? but: in a case that is not ??? even R' Meir give thanks And R' Yochanan said: to you I that they said even to Rabbi Yosei: Up to this point, R' Yosi does not come to say i.e., what he really means is not that there i.e., in another mishna except It is because of this: for he says blessing that is not established rabbis but: he said "of whom all things came into being through His word" they decreed rabbis even R' Yosi give thanks Benjamin ??? and he said you shall make the blessing: Master That this ??? Rav said he has fulfilled his obligation For didn't Rav say Any blessing where there is not in it the invocation of the Name It is not blessing for he said: Blessed be the Merciful one Master That this ??? Hey, isn't it the case that in the case of three blessings What then does it mean when it says he has fulfilled his obligation for he says Rav also he has fulfilled his obligation the hands of the first blessing What then does it mean when it says Come and hear from this. even though that which she said ??? weekday ??? and these ??? in all tongues The passage about Sotah ??? tithe the recitation of Shema and prayer and the blessing after the meal It was necessary to provide both opinions For it might have entered your mind that I would say: What case is he dealing with? that which she said ??? weekday so that thus it will be they decreed rabbis ??? and that which was sanctified for Temple use but not he said ??? weekday so that thus it will be they decreed rabbis ??? and that which was sanctified for Temple use I would say No. ??? Back to the main body of the text: Rav said Any blessing where there is not in it the invocation of the Name It is not blessing And Rabbi Yochanan said: Any blessing where there is not in it the kingdom of It is not blessing Abayye said: ??? of Rav ??? as it is taught: (Deut. 26) No. ??? and not ??? No. ??? and not ??? Your Name upon it And even the kingdom of No. The tanna teaches: and R' Yochanan It was taught by and not ??? Your Name ??? upon it

דף מ,ב משנה

and on a thing that does not grow from the land he says "of whom all things came into being through His word" upon the vinegar and on the unripe fruits which fell of their own accord and on the locusts he says "of whom all things came into being through His word" R' Yehuda says: Any thing that was of the nature of a curse They do not bless upon it

If a person sat down to a meal, and there were before him many varieties R' Yehuda says: if there is among them an item from the seven species of Israel upon that one he makes the blessing first, in preference to any of the other foods in front of him but the sages say he makes the blessing upon whichever from them that he wishes

דף מ,ב גמרא

The rabbis taught: on a thing that do not grow from the land For example, meat ??? and fish says "of whom all things came into being through His word" on ??? and on ??? and on ??? says ??? on the bread ??? and on the wine ??? and on the cooked food that which is in the past ??? says ??? on ??? and on ??? and on ??? says ??? This comes to imply ??? Is this not ??? For it was taught: ??? the land is forbidden ??? the land and it is permitted ??? and if he said all ??? by the is forbidden Even ??? Abayye said: ??? his rabbi; ??? No. ??? Hey, isn't it the case that on a thing that do not grow from the land The tanna teaches: It was taught by on a thing that do not sucks from ??? and on ??? What then does it mean when it says unripe fruits which fell of their own accord R' Zeira and R' ??? One says ??? and one says dates ??? We have learnt in a Mishna: R' Yehuda says: Any thing that was of the nature of a curse They do not bless upon it This is satisfactory ??? we were ??? for him of the nature of a curse except for one for he said: dates ??? What then does it mean when it says of the nature of a curse ??? that it is possible that they said This is satisfactory for one for he said: ??? we were ??? upon them ??? except ??? dates ??? "who created the fruit of the tree" he had asked for him ??? except ??? does not disagree ??? Because specifically, where they disagree is this: ??? For it was taught in a baraita ??? white figs and the daughters of ??? Rabbah bar bar Channah said that R' Yochanan said ??? figs ??? white figs Rabbah bar bar Channah said that R' Yochanan said ??? the daughters of ??? Rabbah bar bar Channah said that R' Yochanan said ??? unripe fruits which fell of their own accord ??? R' ??? and R' Zeira One says ??? and one says dates ??? This is satisfactory ??? we were where he teaches ??? he this he is exempt from punishment although his action was improper this one ??? he is liable except for one for he said: dates ??? he is liable ??? Here in this case, with what are we dealing? ??? for thus said Rabbi Isaac that R' Yochanan said It is because of this: R' Eliezer son of Ya'akov ??? that it is possible that they said
