PREVIEW OF THE DAFCAST WEBSITE FOR CYCLE 13

Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

Credits

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף נא,ב משנה

these are matters that are between the academy of Shammai and between the academy of Hillel in the case of a meal the academy of Shammai say one makes the blessing on the day and after this he makes the blessing on the wine And the academy of Hillel say he makes the blessing on the wine and after this he makes the blessing on the day the academy of Shammai say we wash the hands and after this mix the cup And the academy of Hillel say mix the cup and after this. we wash the hands the academy of Shammai say he wipes his hands on the napkin and he places it on the table And the academy of Hillel say on the seat cushion the academy of Shammai say we sweep the house and after this we wash the hands before birkat hamazon And the academy of Hillel say we wash the hands and after this. we sweep the house Regarding the order of the blessings when a meal extends up to the time of havdalah the academy of Shammai say lamp and meal spices and Havdalah And the academy of Hillel say lamp and spices meal and Havdalah Regarding the wording of the blessing in Havdalah over the light, the academy of Shammai say who created the illumination of the fire And the academy of Hillel say created the illuminations of the fire They do not bless Not on the lamp and not on the spices of some texts read: worshippers of the stars and contellations some texts read: gentiles and not on the lamp and not on the spices of the dead i.e., on the incense that is used for a funeral and not on the lamp and not on the spices of idolatry and they do not bless on the lamp until its light is used whoever ate and forgot and did not bless the academy of Shammai say he must return to his place where he ate and he shall bless there And the academy of Hillel say he shall place in the place where he remembered and until when may he make the blessing until it is the case that he has digested the meal that is in his stomach Another case They brought to them wine after the meal if there is not there anything except that specific cup and therefore that single cup will need to be used for both bitkat hamazon and havdalah The academy of Shammai say: he makes the blessing on the wine and after this he makes the blessing on the meal but the academy of Hillel say: he makes the blessing on the meal and after this he makes the blessing on the wine and they answer "Amen" after a Jew has blessed but they do not answer "Amen" after a Cuthean has blessed unless it has been heard the entire bracha, completely.

The rabbis taught: items that are between the academy of Shammai And the academy of Hillel in the case of a meal the academy of Shammai say he makes the blessing on the day and after this he makes the blessing on the wine ??? and Already and that which was sanctified for Temple use the day ??? wine does not come And the academy of Hillel say he makes the blessing on the wine and after this he makes the blessing on the day ??? to "Kedushah", to say Another thing: the blessing on the wine ??? and you shall bless..." the day It is not ??? but when it is not ??? before and the halacha is in accordance with the words of The academy of Hillel What then does it mean when it says Another explanation: And if you say there i.e., in another mishna both and here in this other case, one So, here, both ??? the blessing on the wine ??? and you shall bless..." the day It is not ??? but when it is not ??? before and the halacha is in accordance with the words of The academy of Hillel This is obvious! for it is the case that ??? a heavenly voice If you wish, I would say before a heavenly voice And if you wish, I would say after a heavenly voice
