Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף כז,א גמרא

And they said ??? of the sukkah and when they brought to him to Rabbi ??? he eats less than the quantity of an egg they brought on the napkin and he ate except of the sukkah and not one who recites a blessing after him: this one an egg's volume he is required a sukkah Let us say, ??? of Rav Yosef and Abaye perhaps, less than the quantity of an egg ??? and the blessing it does not require this one an egg's volume he is required ??? and the blessing

דף כז,א משנה

Rabbi Eliezer says: fourteen meals a person is required to eat in a sukkah One by day and one by night but the sages say There is not, regarding the matter, ??? outside from the night of the first Yom Tov of the Holiday of Sukkot only

And furthermore, R' Eliezer said whoever who did not eat some texts read: on the night of the first Yom Tov he makes it up on the night of the final Yom Tov of the Holiday of Sukkot But the sages say: There is not, regarding the matter, restitution and on this it is said (Ecc. 1) coins it is not possible to repair and its lack it is not possible ???

דף כז,א גמרא

What is the reason מאי טעמא of Rabbi Eliezer ??? similar to ??? Just as ??? One by day and one by night Even a sukkah One by day and one by night And the rabbbis ??? Just as ??? If it was he is required ??? If it was he is required No. ??? Even a sukkah also If it was he is required ??? If it was he is required No. ??? If so, Even if on the night of Yom Tov (holiday) ??? also that R' Yochanan said It is because of this: R' Shimon son of ??? it is said here, five ten ??? five ten on the Holiday the commandments. Just as there the first night guilt-obligation from here and onwards is a voluntary act Even here, the first night guilt-obligation from here and onwards is a voluntary act and there in that case From where do we derive this? Scripture states: (Ex. 12) in the evening, ??? the commandments the scripture ??? And furthermore, Thus said Rabbi ??? Hey, isn't it the case that Thus said Rabbi Eliezer fourteen meals a person is required to eat in a sukkah One by day and one by night he said ??? Rav Ami said in it had a vision R' Eliezer ??? in what way Shall I say ??? a meal ??? Rather, what can we conclude? he makes it up he makes it up ??? Another teaching is like this: if ??? he has fulfilled his obligation He asked ??? of ??? the king Rabbi Eliezer For example, I ??? he is regularly accustomed to eat except a meal One by day What then? ??? a meal One ??? He said to him: Every day and day, you ??? how much ??? and now If it was you ??? side dishes One ??? And furthermore, They asked For example, I in which there is for me two women One in Tiberias, and one in Tzippori and there are for me two ??? One in Tiberias, and one in Tzippori What then? ??? of the sukkah ??? He said to him: No. for I say all that comes ??? of the sukkah wasted ??? of the first It was taught: R' Eliezer says:

דף כז,ב גמרא

yes. ??? of the sukkah And we do not make a sukkah ??? of festival But the sages say: ??? of the sukkah doing a sukkah ??? of festival they agree ??? "She has fallen ??? and builds ??? of festival What is the reason מאי טעמא of Rabbi Eliezer Scripture states: (in Deut. 16) the Holiday of Sukkot ??? shall you do to you seven days One who acts a sukkah ??? And the rabbbis thus he comes to say i.e., what he really means is: the Merciful One One who acts a sukkah on the Holiday they agree ??? "She has fallen ??? and builds it ??? of festival This is obvious! What would you have said? This ??? She It is not ??? Come and learn from this. It was taught: R' Eliezer says: in the same way that do not a person he would exit the hands of ??? on Yom Tov ??? of the Holiday of Sukkot ??? of his fellow As it is written (Lev. 23) ??? to you by day ??? wood he returns ??? thus in the same way yes. a person he would exit the hands of ??? of his fellow As it is written the Holiday of Sukkot ??? shall you do to you seven days ??? But the sages say: despite the fact where they said yes. a person he would exit the hands of ??? on Yom Tov ??? of his fellow but: he would exit the hands of ??? of his fellow As it is written (Lev. 23) all ??? This teaches for all of Israel The intention ??? in a sukkah One And the rabbbis This to you What then does it mean when it says ??? of him. should bring himself ??? stolen but: ??? it is written all ??? and R' Eliezer This all ??? What then does it mean when it says does he act? for him should bring himself ??? and a child ??? And the rabbbis immediately where they said doing a sukkah ??? of festival No. It was necessary to provide both opinions he read The Rabbis taught It once happened ??? the face of R' Eliezer his rabbi; ??? He said to him: ??? that he was R' Eliezer says: ??? I ??? that do not ??? As it is written (Deut. 14) ??? you ??? Really? For didn't R' say Isaac ??? a person ??? the face of his rabbi; ??? as it is said (II Kings 4) Why ??? the day No. new and not Sabbath from this general principle it would follow ??? Sabbath ??? There is no difficulty. this one ??? and comes ??? this one ??? and not will come ??? The Rabbis taught It once happened ??? Eliezer ??? of Yochanan ??? And there are those who say it was ??? and they come the sun of the sukkah He said to him: What then? ??? upon it ??? He said to him: yes. to you all ??? from Israel that did not have He placed from him ??? they come the sun ??? the sukkah He said to him: What then? ??? upon it ??? He said to him: yes. to you all ??? from Israel that did not have they have fulfilled the mitzvah from him prophets ??? Yehudah and Benjamin ??? kings by the mouth of prophets they come the sun ??? of R' Eliezer he took Yochanan ??? upon it ??? R' Eliezer ??? behind him and went out No. because of ??? regarding items except because of who did not say a thing that did not have "Hear!" ??? his rabbi; In reality lit: In the world in what way does does he act? thus For didn't R' Eliezer say yes. ??? of the sukkah a foot after ??? For didn't R' Eliezer say ??? I ??? that do not ??? Sabbath ??? for him ??? For it was taught in a baraita ??? R' Eliezer says: at a time i.e., in a case ??? and suspended ??? in it And if not, yes. ??? in it But the sages say: whether like this or whether like that ???
