Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף ב,א משנה

The scroll i.e., the Book of Esther is read on Adar 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 Not less i.e., not on days numbering less than 11 and not more i.e., not on days numbering greater than 15 Purim itself falls on 14 Adar, and one of the observances of Purim is the reading of the Megillah, the Book of Esther. However, depending on the circumstances, the reading of the Megillah may occur on a date other than the 14th. The Mishna then explains how each number can arise: In cities that have been walled since the days of Joshua bin Nun they read on the 15th. Villages and large towns read on the 14th But villages may advance the reading to the preceding market day How so? ??? to be ??? with two Villages and large towns read on that very day ??? wall to the next day ??? to be on the third day of the week ('Tuesday') or, on the fourth day of the week ('Wednesday') Villages advance it to the preceding market day and large towns read on that very day ??? wall to the next day ??? to be ??? Villages and large towns read on that very day ??? wall tomorrow ??? to be ??? Villages advance it to the preceding market day and large towns ??? wall read on that very day ??? to be on Shabbat Villages and large towns advance it and read to the preceding market day ??? wall tomorrow ??? to be after the Sabbath Villages advance it to the preceding market day and large towns read on that very day ??? wall tomorrow

דף ב,א גמרא

The scroll i.e., the Book of Esther is read ??? From where do we derive this? From where do we derive this? ??? to say ??? the sages ??? on ??? to be advance it to the preceding market day so that ??? water and meal ??? We thus we say it. ??? all of them the men of the Great Assembly ??? For if it was ??? the men of the Great Assembly ??? they came rabbis ??? they decreed the men of the Great Assembly For it was taught in a mishna: It is not possible for a bet din to nullify the words of a bet din his fellow unless it is greater than it in wisdom and in number Rather: This is obvious! So why was it taught? all of them the men of the Great Assembly established in a case ??? Rav Shamen??? bar Abba said that R' Yochanan said Scripture states: (Esther 9) to establish these days of Purim in their time many different times did they establish i.e., because the word zemaneihim is plural, we can deduce that the men of the Great Assembly established all these dates as possible dates when the megillah might be read. This ??? for him ??? If so, Let Scripture say time What then does it mean when it says their times ??? should bring himself the time of this one is not like the time of that one. If so, Let Scripture say their time What then does it mean when it says their times ??? all of them I would say ??? their times is equivalent ??? Just as their time two Even their times two and so go ahead and say ??? and thirteen Like what was said by Rav Shmuel bar Yitzchak the 13th is the time for the community for all She and not It is necessary for him ??? Here in this case, also, the 13th is the time for the community for all She And it is not necessary ??? and so go ahead and say ??? (Esther 9) and one does not cross it is written And R' Shmuel bar Nachmani said Scripture states: (Esther 9) ??? who ??? at them." ??? days ??? the 11th and the 12th and so go ahead and say ??? and thirteen R' Shimon bar Yitzchak said the 13th is the time for the community for all She And it is not necessary ??? and so go ahead and say ??? and one does not cross it is written R' Shimon bar Nachmani What is the reason מאי טעמא did not say ??? the differences among "time", "times", and "their times" It does not. ??? for him And Rav Shman??? bar Abba What is the reason מאי טעמא did not say ??? He could say to you This certain individual ??? he As it is written Rabbah bar bar Channah said that R' Yochanan said these are the words of Rabbi Akiva ??? who derives an explanation from the differences among "time", "times", and "their times" but: the sages say they do not read it except in its time They challenged him from this teaching: R' Yehudah said: when does the previous statement apply? at a time i.e., in a case ??? and a Jew lit, Israel ??? on ??? but: in these times (nowadays) Because ??? of it yes. read it Rather: in its time Rabbi Yehudah who follow the reasoning ??? ??? Shall I say who follow the reasoning ??? ??? even if it is in these times (nowadays) ??? for this ??? Rather: Is this not who follow the reasoning ??? is a law established by the Rabbis and at a time ??? and a Jew lit, Israel ??? on ??? from this we recite This refutes Rabbi Yochanan, and he is refuted. there are those who say איכא דאמרי he said Rabbah son of son of ??? R' Yochanan said: these are the words of Rabbi Akiva ??? but: the sages said in these times (nowadays) Because ??? of it they do not read it except in its time Another teaching is like this: Rabbi Yehuda said when does the previous statement apply? at a time i.e., in a case ??? and a Jew lit, Israel ??? on ??? but: in these times (nowadays) Because ??? of it they do not read it except in its time Rav Ashi has a problem with R' Yehudah Because R' Yehudah said ???

דף ב,ב גמרא

??? to it ??? like R' Yosi son of Yehudah And who said it? Rabbi Yehudah in these times (nowadays) Because ??? of it they do not read it except in its time We challenge that from the following baraita R' Yehudah said: when does the previous statement apply? a place ??? with two ??? but: a place that do not enters with two ??? they do not read it except in its time a place ??? with two ??? from this we recite and even in these times (nowadays) ??? to it ??? like Rabbi Yosi son of Yehudah but on account of ??? for him of Rabbi Yehudah Because R' Yehudah said ??? ??? to it ??? like Rabbi Yosi son of Yehudah Rav Ashi we heard for him That there are for it teaches: to it like Rabbi Yehudah and there are for it teaches: to it like Rabbi Yosi son of Yehudah ??? for him of Rabbi Yehudah ??? Yehudah he said The one who teaches to it like Rabbi Yehudah Is this not ??? The one who teaches to it like Rabbi Yosi son of Yehudah ??? wall since the days of Joshua bin Nun read on the fifteenth ??? words Rabba said: For scripture said: (Esther 9) because of this ??? etc. ??? ten ??? on the fifteenth and so go ahead and say ??? ten ??? A general principle: A general principle: No. Is this not Israel ??? And furthermore, ??? and until ??? it is written and so go ahead and say ??? as it is written (Esther 9) to be ??? day four ten to renew ??? and day five ten ??? in all year" If it was it was. the writing of day four ten and five ten ??? now As it is written day four ten and day five ten he came and interrupt Behold! ??? ten and Behold! on the fifteenth and so go ahead and say ??? If it was They asked ??? If it was They asked ??? Scripture states: in their time the time of this one No. the time of this one and so go ahead and say ??? From where do we derive this? Scripture states: (Esther 9) the days ??? that is not For This a Tanna taught: as it is taught: Rabbi Yehoshua son of ??? says In cities that have been walled since the days of ??? read on the fifteenth What is the reason מאי טעמא of Rabbi Joshua son of ??? For ??? Just as ??? wall since the days of ??? and read on the fifteenth Even all ??? wall since the days of ??? read on the fifteenth and it was taught ??? What is the reason מאי טעמא he learns it ??? It is written here (Esther 9) because of this ??? And it is written there (Deut. 3) ??? in great quantity greatly Just as there ??? wall since the days of Joshua bin Nun Even here, ??? wall since the days of Joshua bin Nun This is satisfactory Rabbi Yehoshua son of ??? did not say ??? the one who does not have ??? except a Tanna taught: ??? What is the reason מאי טעמא did not say ??? Joshua son of ??? What is the reason מאי טעמא for it is the case that it has ??? thus he comes to say i.e., what he really means is: except ??? like who No. ??? and not ??? Rabba said: And there are those who say it was so that that I ??? Because was it made? of it a miracle This is satisfactory a Tanna ??? it is written (Esther 9) ??? a city a city ??? between ??? wall since the days of Joshua bin Nun ??? wall since the days of ??? a city a city also ??? between ??? except to Rabbi Joshua son of ??? This is satisfactory ??? between ??? except a city a city for what he came He could say to you Rabbi Yehoshua son of ??? and a Tanna ??? who it's settled. immediately is what he has ??? why do I have except he read ??? he who has arrived ??? Joshua son of Levi he who has arrived for he said: Rabbi Yehoshua son of Levi ??? and all ??? to him and all ??? with it it is judged ??? up to how much he said Rabbi ??? (and there are those who say Rabbi Chiyya bar Abba ??? one mil and let us say, one mil It is to learn from this ??? how much you shall ??? and he said Rabbi ??? (and there are those who say Rabbi Chiyya bar Abba ??? For it is written (Lev. 27) ??? the commandments. that do not prophet permission to renew a thing From here, And furthermore, Watch out for leading vav !! For didn't Rav Chisda say ???
