PREVIEW OF THE DAFCAST WEBSITE FOR CYCLE 13

Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

Disclaimers

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף ז,ב משנה

There is no difference between Yom Tov (holiday) to Shabbat except the needs of food for the soul alone

דף ז,ב גמרא

The previous Mishnah ended with the formula “There is no difference between X and Y, except Z”. As it does, the Talmud will now bring out a series of other teachings whose only connection is that their wording follows the same formula. Hey, isn't it the case that in the matter of preparations of the needs of food for the soul both this and this are equivalent Our mishna does not rule like Rabbi Yehudah as it is taught in a baraita: There is no difference between Yom Tov (holiday) to Shabbat except the needs of food for the soul Rabbi Yehudah permits even preparations of the needs of food for the soul What is the reason מאי טעמא of the first tanna? Scripture states: regarding food preparation on Yom Tov, (Ex. 12) it may be done but not its preparations And R' Yehudah said the verse said "for you" for you means for all your needs And the other one i.e., the first Tanna must also explain why it is written "for you" He would explain: for you but not some texts say for the worshippers of the stars and some texts say for gentiles or, another explanation, for you but not for dogs And the other one i.e., Rabbi Yehudah also must explain the word "it" that appeared earlier in the verse For behold, it is written "it" it is written "it" and then it is written "for you" here, in the case of preparations for cooking where it is possble to do them from the eve of Yom Tov (holiday) in such a case it would be prohibited to do them on Yom Tov. But here, in the case of preparations for cooking where it is not possible to do them from the eve of Yom Tov (holiday)

דף ז,ב משנה

There is no difference between Sabbath and Yom Kippur except that this i.e., Shabbat One who intentionally violates it is punished -- executed -- by human hands and this i.e., Yom Kippur One who intentionally violates it is punished with karet spiritual cutting-off

דף ז,ב גמרא

For behold, in the matter of restitution both this and this are equivalent If a single act is both a violation of the sanctity of the day and an action which results in a monetary obligation, the rules regarding restitution are the same. In accordance with whom is the position of our mishna? Rabbi Nechonya ben Hakanah is it. as it is taught in a baraita: R' Nechonya ben Hakanah would make Yom Kippur like Shabbat in matters pertaining to restitution Just as Sabbath violations make him forfeit his soul but exempt him from the laws of restitution In the same way, Yom Kippur violations make him forfeit his soul but exempt him from the laws of restitution

It was taught there: all ??? something ??? as it is said (Deut. 25) ??? your brother ??? immediately ??? Behold! he ??? these are the words of Rabbi ??? son of ??? R' Yochanan said: ??? upon it ??? on R' ??? son of ??? Rabba said: They said: among Rav ??? There is no difference between Yom Kippur. to Shabbat except for this One who intentionally violates it by human hands and this One who intentionally violates it ??? and if ??? This and this by human hands She Rav Nachman said So, with whom does it agree? Rabbi Isaac She for he said: ??? there is not in this case. as it is taught: Rabbi Isaac says ??? are in the general category they were and for what reason was it taken out he is spiritually cut off ??? and not ??? Rav Ashi said: Even if you say rabbis this the essence One who intentionally violates it by human hands and this the essence One who intentionally violates it ???
