PREVIEW OF THE DAFCAST WEBSITE FOR CYCLE 13

Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

דף ב,א משנה

a virgin gets married on the fourth day of the week, i.e. "Wednesday" and a widow on the fifth day of the week, i.e. "Thursday" For twice in the week courts lit. "houses of judgement" sit in the cities on the second day of the week, i.e. "Monday" and on the fifth day of the week, i.e. "Thursday" for if he had claims regarding her virginity he could arise early to go to court

דף ב,א גמרא

Rav Yosef said Rav Yehudah said that Shmuel said On account of what did they say a virgin gets married on the fourth day of the week, i.e. "Wednesday" on account of that which we learned the time came and they did not marry would-be brides in this situation have the following: they eat from that which is his and they eat from terumah It is possible to misinterpret from this that if the time came on the first day in the week he would have to provide for her food Therefore, we learned: a virgin gets married on the fourth day of the week, i.e. "Wednesday"

Rav Yosef said Master of Avraham He hangs a teaching on that which was not taught! Rav Yosef is challenged: Which was taught and which was not taught? We know that both were! This was taught and this was taught! The Gemera tries explaining Rav Yosef's objection again Rather: He hangs a teaching whose reason was explained exegetically from that which was taught without its reason being explained exegetically Rather: If it was said This is how it was said: Rav Yehudah said that Shmuel said On account of what did they say a virgin gets married on the fourth day of the week, i.e. "Wednesday" for if he had claims regarding her virginity he could arise early to go to the court bet din So let her be married on the first day in the week for if he had claims regarding her virginity he could arise early to go to the court The sages were concerned about well-being of the daughters of Israel that he the bridegroom should be troubling himself in perparing a meal for three days the first day in the week and the second day in the week and the third day in the week and on the fourth he marries her. and now that we have learned they were concerned that which we have learned the time came and they were not married they eat of that which is his and they eat from terumah the time came on the first day in the week from the midst of that it is not possible to marry he does not ??? to it food For this reason he was ill or ??? She or ??? a menstruant he does not ??? to it food and there are who seeks to it ??? he was ill What then? there i.e., in another mishna The reason is What then does it mean when it says It is because of this: ??? and Here in this case, also, this one ??? or, perhaps, there i.e., in another mishna ??? they decreed for him rabbis Here in this case, It does not. and if you seek to say he was ill ??? to it food she was ill What then? ??? he said to it I Hey, isn't it the case that ??? or, perhaps, ??? he said for him your field has been flooded and if you seek to say he said for him your field has been flooded ??? a menstruant What then? in the hour ??? No. ??? to you

דף ב,ב גמרא

that is not ??? he said for him your field has been flooded For ??? to you that did not have in the hour of ??? What then does it mean when it says immediately that is not in the hour of ??? he said for him your field has been flooded or, perhaps, immediately That there are ??? that he came ??? he is equivalent. ??? Rav ??? the time came and they did not marry they eat of his. and they eat from terumah No. ??? No. The tanna teaches: except Watch out for leading vav !! and they did not marry How so? If it was that he came ??? why is it that they eat of his. and they eat from terumah except Is this not ??? For This ??? And we have learned they eat of his. and they eat from terumah Rav Ashi said In reality lit: In the world I would say to you all ??? No. ??? and that he came ??? we do not have In justice, he ??? for him ??? No. ??? But the beginning of the teaching, ??? a Tanna taught: also at the end of the teaching, ??? Rabba said: and in the matter of ??? is not thus Perhaps, his reasoning is Raba yes. compulsion ??? for him to Raba this one Shall I say ??? For it was taught in a baraita Behold! this ??? if I did not come from here and until two ten new did he die in the midst of two ten new he does not writ did he die he ??? writ this one ??? Behold! this writ and Perhaps In reality lit: In the world I would say to you ??? also he does not writ but it Back to the main body of the text: Come and learn from this. ??? writ after death yes. writ after death But hey, wasn't this already taught elsewhere But the beginning of the teaching, Behold! this ??? if ??? Behold! this ??? this Behold! this ??? after death did not say anything Perhaps To exclude ??? as it is taught: ??? say one ??? Rav Yehudah said that Shmuel said among judgement ??? reason that to it like Rabbi Yosi for he said: its time of a legal document ??? upon it So rather, from the end of the teaching: ??? if I did not come from here and until Twelve new did he die in the midst of two ten new Behold! this writ did he die and it is the law ??? Perhaps did he die ??? that is not it's settled. for him ??? in the presence of ??? except ??? for he said: them If it was No. ??? and until ??? he came in the rear of ??? He said to them they saw ??? they saw ??? Shmuel said Is this not ??? and Perhaps ??? that I ??? for him ??? and not ??? except Raba reason out the logic. ??? he comes to say i.e., what he really means is: It is because of this: ??? but on account of ??? It is because of this: ??? For if it was is what you say? Do you really mean that? No. ??? writ
