PREVIEW OF THE DAFCAST WEBSITE FOR CYCLE 13

Please do not forward this link around yet! This is still in development and will be "released", God willing, on August 1, in time for the thirteenth cycle of Daf Yomi.

Disclaimers

This is an early draft. I haven't proofread; there are plenty of typos and probably some more significant errors as well.
Most pages on this site are currently auto-translated. The autotranslations are intended as a starting point for my manual translations. At best, they are awkward stringing-togethers of words and phrases in the corpus database that can benefit from cleaning up. At worst, they are picking the wrong homograph. Auto-translations are indicated by italics.
I am not a rabbi or an expert. These are my translations, and in some cases I am certainly misunderstanding things.
The Talmud is a document of its time. While the Talmud is a foundational document of Judaism, it must be read in its historical context. There are passages that are xenophobic, sexist, and irreconcilable with modern science. Not everything in these pages represents contemporary Judaism.

Copyright

This translation is protected by copyright. I'm putting a lot of effort into this project. Please respect that by only copying with my permission.
I intend to provide free licenses for most uses. I plan to use a Creative Commons CC-NC-BY-SA license, which will allow you to re-use my translations as long as you don't charge money for them (NC), as long as you give me credit (BY), and as long as you make your derived work available under the same terms (SA). But I'm not ready to do that yet because this is still a very rough work-in-progress.
In the meantime, if you want to re-use this, please contact me. I am willing to discuss re-use on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps the one page you want to use is actually ready for re-use. Ask. I'll probably work out a way to say "yes."

Credits

I need to clean up this section. But for now, I'll note that I've made use of the Hebrew/Aramaic text of the Bavli at Mechon Mamre; Jastrow's dictionary; "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" by Yitzchak Frank. I've also used the big three translations of the Talmud --- Soncino (English), Artscroll (English), and Steinsaltz (Hebrew) --- and the Kehati (English) edition of the Mishna, to help me understand passages before translating them.

This is only in the case that he was The greatness ??? atop it He said to him Rav ??? And if you say So, here, For it was taught: some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile is invalid, some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile ??? a slave he returns Rav Nachman said Is this not the validity She that they said ??? for him some texts say: to a worshipper of stars ??? in the matter of ??? from this general principle it would follow ??? "writing" is valid For it was taught: some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile is invalid, this particular ??? She for he said: ??? Kerati and in the case of "writing" ??? Hey, isn't it the case that certainly some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile ??? Rav Nachman said says he was ??? And if you wish, I would say Behold! ??? with whom does it agree? ??? She for he said: ??? Kerati and Rav Yehudah Shmuel said This is only in the case ??? a place ??? and thus Thus said Rabbi ??? in the name because of Ulla This is only in the case ??? a place ??? The entirety are proper ??? ??? except for a deaf-mute and a child ??? some texts say: and a worshipper of stars some texts say: and a gentile ??? A deaf person ??? a mute ??? some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile ??? is invalid, but: ??? and he returned ??? if it was open, ??? and he returned ??? and he returned ??? is valid This is the general rule: all ??? in knowledge" is value

דף כג,א גמרא

This is satisfactory A deaf person a mute and a child ??? My son, ??? some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile also ??? son of ??? he except ??? why is it that did not say Rav Sheishet on account of that is not know ??? and to whoever ??? Rav Yosef disagreed how ??? is permitted. ??? how people ??? by night except ??? Here in this case, also, ??? except Thus said Rabbi Joseph Here in this case, "in outside the land" i.e., outside the land of Israel is what we're dealing with (lit. what we're immersed in) who seeks to say before ??? before ??? and he did not find to say He said to him Abaye Except I can object with text from here: if it was open, ??? he said Here, too, ??? Hey, isn't it the case that The tanna teaches: if it was open, ??? and he returned ??? is valid ??? had a vision yes. No. ??? had a vision No. ??? that even for the sake of that is not ??? had a vision where he teaches ??? and he returned ??? The reason is ??? this one No. ??? had a vision No. a Tanna taught: also if it was open, ??? and he returned ??? Rav Ashi said ??? also where he teaches This is the general rule: all ??? in knowledge" is valid and not The tanna teaches: all ??? is valid Learn from this They asked of him ??? Ami a slave What then? ??? a writ of a woman immediately ??? He said to them ??? for him some texts say: to a worshipper of stars ???

דף כג,ב גמרא

from this general principle it would follow ??? is valid Rav Assi said: Rabbi Yochanan said: yes. ??? was it made? ??? writ ??? immediately ??? on account of that is not ??? He disagreed with this R' Elazar The reason is ??? this one ??? is valid Hey, isn't it the case that some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile Hey, isn't it the case that a Cuthean ??? terumah ??? For it was taught in a baraita ??? and the Cuthean ??? terumah and we have learnt in a Mishna: some texts read: a worshiper of stars some texts read: a gentile lit., a stranger ??? of Israel Even if ??? yes. its terumah terumah What is the reason? Is this not It is because of this: As it is written ??? (in Numbers 18) also "You Just as "You Israel Even ??? Israel They said: of the academy of R' ??? No. Just as "You Jews lit., children of the covenant Even ??? Jews lit., children of the covenant he said R' Chiyya bar Abba that R' Yochanan said yes. ??? was it made? ??? a writ of a woman immediately ??? on account of that is not ??? And even though that we have learned Behold! a maidservant ??? son of ??? if it was ??? it has taken possession to him What then does it mean when it says if it was ??? it has taken possession to him For he came Rav Shmuel bar Yehudah R' Yochanan said: both he said ??? items ??? he accepts writ to his fellow immediately his rabbi; of his fellow but not immediately his rabbi; are his and if in a whisper a person to say -- this refers to The halacha is ??? if it was ??? it has taken possession to him say to him two ??? ??? R' Zeira and R' Shmuel son of Rav Isaac One says So, with whom does it agree? Rabbi She for he said: ??? his male slave he bought and one says What is the reason? of Rabbi In this case, his reasoning is transgresses ??? of its mother he was it made? ??? to it one ???

דף כג,ב משנה

Even the women those that are not ??? to say did he die ??? ??? the daughter of ??? the daughter of ??? Just as between writ ??? the his wife herself ??? ??? but only that it it requires to say before ??? before ???

דף כג,ב גמרא

For it was taught: in the same way that do not ??? to say did he die ??? thus in the same way yes. ??? Rav Yosef said There is no difficulty. here, in the land." here, in areas outside the Land of Israel in the land." ??? in areas outside the Land of Israel ??? No. ??? He said to him Abaye ??? in the land." For if it was will come the master of ??? of him. That there are to say ??? No. ??? "in outside the land" i.e., outside the land of Israel For if it was will come the master of ??? No. ??? of him. ??? This teaching is consistent with the position ??? Rabbi Shimon son of ??? says It is because of this: Rabbi Akiva a woman she is believed ??? From a "kal vachomer", for just as women where they said the sages yes. ??? to say did he die ??? She ??? to say did he die ??? is it not logical ???
